as the first game in the series on the wii, we can expect it to be an improvement over the gamecube original, and the fact that the game is being handled by the same people behind the previous entries, being assisted by some of the original creators, gives it a lot of credibility. the fact that it has gone back to the roots of the series, and is still sticking to the formula that worked so well in the original game, should help to ensure a good experience, and it is good to see the development team making it clear that they are not making a’more polished’ version of the original game. the gameplay has been adjusted for the wii remote and the gamepad, making use of the latter, and, since the camera is not on the gamepad, there is no issue with having it left on the gamecube, which should reduce the amount of loading screens, and it should be a lot more intuitive to use and control, while the lack of motion controls should not impact the gameplay too much, since the series has always had the unique ability to allow you to jump off the scenery and move around in creative ways. the music has been done by the same composer, misono, and the same songs are available for both tales of the abyss and tales of symphonia, which should help to keep the music fresh, as well as the voice acting from the original game.
speaking of games, a number of wii titles are being released in the wake of the nintendo wii console, with almost every major game developer and publisher having at least one title available to the system. tales of symphonia: dawn of the new world, however, is one of the few wii titles that has been specifically developed for the console, and while it doesn’t look like it’ll make a direct impact on the nintendo wii’s sales, it certainly has the potential to be a worthy title. with a release date of 20th november 2008, it’s certainly something to keep an eye on. until then, here’s to hoping that the story about the upcoming wii sequel to tales of symphonia can be kept under wraps for a while longer!
i was really impressed with the first tales of the abyss game on wii, with the game having some seriously slick visuals, and it certainly helped build up a lot of anticipation for this sequel. however, i didn’t think it was particularly different to the original tales of symphonia on gamecube, and didn’t feel the need to replay it. and the initial reaction from japanese reviewers at its release didn’t really do much to encourage me either. some japanese wii gamers have commented that this game is more of a ‘tourist attraction’ than a proper sequel, but i’m hoping that will change when the game is released in the west in the coming months. it looks like a lot of hard work has gone into the creation of this game, and i’m excited to find out how it all comes together. i’m also really looking forward to seeing what the new battle system will entail, and what an improved field map will look like. whether or not the game will be a success depends on how good it looks, but with tales of the abyss being a very popular game that has been widely enjoyed, there’s a chance of this being a hit. to be honest, any game that can make me want to play a gamecube game on wii is a worthy investment for me.
perhaps it’s just me, but i don’t really get the appeal of the ratatosk line-up, and i’m kind of glad i’ll be able to skip out on this one. i’ll be playing tales of the abyss instead and may even give the first tale of the abyss game a go. but, considering the recent successes of the tales franchise on wii, i can’t say i’m not looking forward to it either. i may actually be more interested in it than i was in the original, and that’s really saying something.
