In Eastern Shore and other rural communities, it’s 95 percent for Republicans. And that’s not just a Maryland phenomenon. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll released Tuesday shows that a majority of women in every state surveyed prefer the Republican Party’s candidate. Only four women in the 24 states polled say they’d vote for Clinton. Another 19 percent are undecided, and 52 percent of women in the states surveyed say they’d vote for Trump. \”What you see in the polling here are the cracks in the foundation of the national coalition Democrats have used to dominate American politics for the past 40 years,\” says Karina Shackleford, a political science professor at the University of Maryland who wrote a report on female support for the GOP. In Maryland, Republicans’ support among college-educated women has been slipping for several years. In a 2012 poll, it was 59 percent for the GOP. But then, former President Barack Obama came to the state and polled just 28 percent. By November 2015, however, GOP support for Maryland women had recovered, to 61 percent. And this year, it is once again back to where it was in 2012. Today, women make up 53 percent of voters in the state, compared to 48 percent for men. And in each of the states polled, Republican women outnumber Republican men by double digits, ranging from 10 to 14 percentage points. What gives? Why are women such political outliers? Both Shackleford and University of Maryland’s Kellye Sawyer, a political science professor who specializes in gender, point to the same thing.
