an active crack in the larsen c ice shelf in antarctica grew in march, reaching 130 kilometers (80 miles) across, a nasa-led study reports. the crack is actively growing, with surface ice moving along the length of the rift for about four meters (13 feet) each day. the study published in geophysical research letters shows the crack, which had previously grown about 40 kilometers (25 miles) and then paused, steadily growing until it was more than 10 times longer than it was in march.
On June 18, 2016, a large fire erupted on the Alaska Peninsula. The fire spread more than 250 miles and destroyed more than 600 structures. Aside from the numerous aircraft that operated to extinguish the fire, Landsat sensors provided support by enhancing the overall situational awareness of fire behavior. The rapid accumulation of two to three-band information enabled fire crews to determine the characteristics of the blaze and determine which firefighting tools were most effective in reducing the growing flames. Enhanced image product from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite were used to identify the fire’s position and movement throughout Alaska. This information was used to create a map which showed the size and spread of the fire, as well as the location of homes that were destroyed in the fire.
We evaluated the spatial agreement between the calibration and validation data sets for the NDSI. The results indicated that the NDSI can be used to estimate the greenness of vegetation in the four-band NDVI dataset on the Landsat-8 satellite. The mean values of NDVI were similar. Moreover, the mean kappa coefficients for the overlapping sample cells were 0.57 for the 2014 data and 0.56 for the 2015 data, indicating that the two sets of data are similar in their proportion of green land and that the kappa coefficients are reproducible using a standard protocol. The spatial distribution of the index differed only slightly from the multi-spectral NDVI derived from the MODIS dataset. No significant correlation between the two data sets was found using a Mantel test (p>0.05).
