tarregas works reached a limited audience. his student j.l. granados was probably the first to publish in the americas, in 1905 with a home edition (transcription vers d’aranjuez, 2 vols). the original work was probably intended for the piano alone. due to the economic depression during the civil war in spain, granados was unemployed. his project was not to publish the parts, but to create an inexpensively mass-produced format. he suggested that they not sell more than 2000 copies.
pujol, in addition to his studies with j.l. granados, was tutored by more renowned players, including antonio barrios, who premiered many of pujols works. pujols first guitar studies began at the age of nine with francisco de ascarza, an unknown teacher in toledo. even at the age of ten, pujol was very well versed in the piano repertoire.
trouble had been brewing for several years in spain. disillusioned with what he saw as the government’s reluctance to improve social conditions and with the way the wealthy abused their powers, he volunteered for army service in the spanish-american war in cuba.
general vallejo, his commander, had tarrega play for him and complimented his soulful playing. vallejo had tarrega play at a variety of functions which brought him to the attention of pedro cerrano, the director of spain’s central conservatory. in 1882, cerrano asked tarrega to come work with him, giving up his army contract. tarrega went to madrid and entered the conservatory in 1883. this was before the end of his army contract.
while tarrega became a professor and a director of the conservatory, he also continued to perform. his student enrique granados studied under tarrega. in 1903, cerrano left madrid to head a royal concert. he asked tarrega to join him. tarrega was uneasy leaving his position as a professor at the conservatory, but cerrano was at the front with spain’s war against france, so he thought he could be of more help there. in 1904, after the war ended, he accepted the position with the king and was part of the royal court.
pujols knowledge of the piano made it easier to arrange his own works for guitar, including the concierto de aranjuez. the opening to this is the famous minuet from g major by johann sebastian bach, using the same rhythm as the opening to his goldberg variations. the spanish guitarist uses chords instead of the chords in the original. any guitar version of the minuet is a guitar transcription of the spanish version. most versions of the aranjuez have an adagio preludio.
the continued advances in the solfège system, since the 19th century, has been developed primarily by german and swiss systems such as the neu-dresden, klindworth/lübeck, ruhnau (roda), organ traduction du clavecin (organ), taubert, barsh. other systems include the zwicky-häseler and the weller-gale method, invented by the german musicians franz august weller and manfred häseler. the french name for this system is the nomenclature de claviers. recently the use of the international solfège nomenclature as a teaching instrument has shown increasing interest. there are numerous publications on the guitar solfège. the solfege heine, of nico silbermann, is a single-page solfège for standard and folk tunings and is available in book and pdf formats, is a modern solfège notation invented for guitar.
tarrega, his teacher, was discouraged by the music publishers in his home town of vilar de mouros, spain about his work (guitar method, lessons and exercises, nr. 4). consequently, his works were limited in publishing and copying. tarregas hopes for this lack of publication was that it would end to the misunderstandings of “simplification”. it is unclear if he meant this as a criticism or just a preference.
