the purpose of this workshop is to present strategies for writing a conference paper from scratch or transforming an already existing document to fit a particular call for papers. from titles to opening up for questions, we will discuss different methods for preparing an engaging and substantive oral presentation, including various technological aids you may want to use.

in 1983, aaas co-sponsored a global seminar on the role of scientific and engineering societies in development, held at mt. holyoke college, massachusetts on september 12-16, 1983. series vii contains correspondence, notes, memos, lists, financial information, grant material, and research papers related to the mt. holyoke seminar. the seminar brought together scientists, engineers, and scholars from all over the world to discuss the role of scientific and engineering societies in development. it was the only opportunity for such a gathering in the united states and in most countries. at the seminar, a number of delegates from different countries presented their experiences in developing countries. various universities, organizations and societies gave opinions on the progress and importance of the seminar and its sub-panels. aaas held a similar seminar in 1985, 1989 and 1991. over 200 participants attended the seminar in 1983. the records consist of: 1) the minutes of the seminar; 2) correspondence, memoranda, and notes; 3) lists of participants; 4) financial information; 5) grants and other material; and 6) research papers. the committee assigned to investigate the seminar was chaired by dr. i.l. birnbaum, and included dr. r.w. butler, dr. c. boxer, dr. richard patz, dr. m. venkataraman, dr. birnbaum, dr. s.j. coakley, and dr. butler. aaas also conducted a global seminar on science, technology, and women in september 12-16, 1983. the minutes of the seminar are included in this series, along with letters from delegates who presented their experiences in developing countries. there are also notes, correspondence, and research papers related to the seminar.
three of the five sub-fields within the area of urban science and engineering are the areas of hydrology, urban water, and waste water. each of these sub-fields focuses on the management, control, treatment, and analysis of water in the urban environment. recent advances in technology and data availability have allowed the scientific community to make a number of advancements in these areas. this course provides the student with an overview of the current methods and technologies that are used to monitor, manage, and treat the urban water cycle. topics include water quality, drinking water, wastewater, stormwater management, and natural systems.

the program emphasizes working in a team environment and provides opportunities for research and writing. students will develop the skills necessary to analyze research materials, evaluate the quality of their own work, and present their findings to a knowledgeable audience. the program is open to all undergraduate students, particularly those pursuing graduate study in the sciences. prerequisite: math 1124 or permission of instructor.
