facebook has not said what percentage of its 1.79 billion monthly active users might have been affected. it said an estimated 50 to 100 million users may have had their account passwords compromised by an attack it is calling quota.
facebook is issuing a security warning to users affected by the bug and is attempting to verify the security status of all their accounts. facebook said it is offering all facebook users affected by the exposed passwords a year of free credit monitoring through a third-party service, but said it is continuing to look for an independent verification service that can detect if an account has been compromised.
facebook’s investigation is ongoing and the company is still determining if any user information has been illegally accessed or misused. so far, facebook has only identified thousands of facebook employees who had access to the information. facebook said it is working with law enforcement and outside auditors to determine if the exposed passwords were exploited by any criminals.
facebook said that a variety of internal systems have been targeted in recent years. these include dating sites, online gaming networks, and credit reporting companies. another security threat facebook recently disabled was the facebook “like” button, which is in fact a web-based extension that allows developers to add the “like” button to their sites. facebook disabled the button over the past six months.
can someone pass me the change password option? i am sick of resetting my passwords, i have to do it so many times my eyes are bleary. did i miss it? the social networking service has now released security updates to correct the “problem” but so far have refused to offer an explanation.
people need to know this. i dont use facebook, but i feel this needs to be said. poking back at facebook doesn’t help, and is just as idiotic as their actions. they say this is a bug, they are totally lying. they changed the password and copied it to other accounts. the intent was to get more people to use workplace on their account, they want to hijack your account for their own purposes. if you use multiple email addresses with the same password you are screwed. google has done this already, you can be locked out of your account if the password is used on more than one device. this is what facebook is trying to do. if you are using multiple accounts they will have to hack into all of them to steal data. they have the data, nothing is stopping them.
i just answered there is not a way to change your password on facebook and have it reflect on your work email. i am using zendesk and they do not have the functionality to change passwords. if there was, it would be incredibly easy to steal passwords and i just sit here and wait for it to happen.
i finally got my account back after almost a year of trying to get it back. i tried changing my password several times but it will not change. it keeps saying that i already use that username. i even tried a different email address because the one i was using was used for a job i had before and got a message that said that address had been used there. i even used a password that i no longer use. nothing works.
same username for 25 years. that used to work. now it doesnt work. it appears they updated or are in the process of updating and are trying to lock people out of their own accounts so they can get bigger and more expensive. guess what you lose. you did no damage at all. i wish the computer geniuses over there spent a little more time on their customers rather than trying to change the world.
