in the spring of 1980, baxandall and his wife, ada, both members of tns, decided to take the organization to more of a social nudity point of view. they were weary of the constant self-defense and defensive responses to the negative press and the seemingly never-ending attempts to legislate nudist family recreation. they realized that the movement needed to reach out beyond the free beaches to a broader audience of people who love naked bodies and are tired of seeing them censored and condemned. they were tired of fighting and decided to try a new approach. they felt that tns should really be a social-conscious, pro-nudist group that could not only advocate for nudism but also lead the way in working for social change. they soon found themselves to be the founders of a new organization. it was called naturist freedom family.
over the next several years, baxandall and his friends worked to build up support for nff among a national audience of nudists and non-nudists. they realized that nudism needed to be more than a simple matter of the right to be naked, and they wanted to reach out to people beyond the family with their message of body-acceptance and community support. they were aware that many people who were considering nudism knew they wanted a safe place to swim and play nude, but they had no interest in, or understanding of, nudism as a social and philosophical movement. to reach the larger audience of people who were interested in social nudism, they organized public nude swimming sessions to give people experience with nude social interaction. they also began using the word nudism in their literature to help people see that nudism is something different from the naked-in-your-own-backyard philosophy. many people were now nudist because they wanted to swim, but they still had no real interest in the movement.
sally mann first noticed the beach sign above the small fishing village of matlacha, about an hour’s drive from her family’s home, when she was about 12. the thought of nudism took hold as a result of her uncle’s christmas party, in which all the guests went topless. a family member took her to another beach, and then to a nudist camp in the spring of 1974. the camp, run by the american association for nude recreation (aanr) was owned and operated by the h.f. ulrich family. the manns were regulars there, and by the time sally was 16 she was already a certified aanr instructor.
during the year the aanr was headquartered in tallahassee, fla., in the mid-1970s, it had about 50 to 75 members. the manns joined in 1974, a year before the h.f. ulrichs took over. they loved the idea of nude recreation, but not the membership requirements. “we decided we were going to join the aanr, but then we looked at their membership brochure and were not impressed,” says sally. “it was really about a lot of stuff that was against our values. we were a libertarian family, and we believed in freedom, so we decided to not join the aanr.”
when sally and her family moved to california in 1975, she looked for other opportunities to practice her passion for nude recreation. her mother and her sister were already members of the hollyhock nudist colony, about an hour north of los angeles, but sally had not yet joined. when she finally did, in 1976, she began teaching swimming lessons to the other members.
sally and her husband joined the family nudist club at the h.f. ulrichs’ other nudist camp in 1977. sally became the camp’s top swimming instructor, and the family participated in a number of outdoor events. they also started running aanr-organized nudist races, which attracted even more people.
