neoliberalism is a political doctrine that holds that for the free market to function efficiently the state must be stripped of its regulatory functions. this view argues that state intervention in the economy and other domains of life are an obstacle to the realization of the aims of the market. neoliberalism is a political ideology that emphasizes the primacy of the private sector over public services and state-controlled industries. according to this view, the free market is the most efficient means for allocating resources and for coordinating the activities of the private sector. free trade is considered the best way to enable the free flow of goods and services across national borders.
contemporary neoliberalism, or what some have called the ‘new’ or ‘neo’ liberalism, is a product of a number of strands of thought. neoliberalism has its origins in a long tradition of liberal thought in the anglo-saxon world, but it has also been influenced by contemporary developments in economics, especially the ideas of milton friedman. neoliberalism is also characterized by a particular view of the world, a set of ideas about the nature of the self, and an understanding of the proper role of the state (north, 1990). neoliberalism is an ideology that views humans as fundamentally free, autonomous individuals who are able to make choices about how they live their lives. it is a worldview in which the individual is the master of his or her own fate (crouch, 2008, p.166). neoliberalism is a form of individualism that sees individuals as isolated agents with a right to choose their own destiny. according to this view, what matters most is a person’s choices and the willingness of others to accept those choices. individual autonomy is important, but so is individual responsibility and the willingness of individuals to accept the consequences of their choices (crouch, 2008, p. this individualism is what has brought about the privatization of schools, healthcare and other social services. the rise of global markets and the struggle for resources and the ability to influence state policies has also led to a domination of the state by corporations and a decline in the size of the state. furthermore, the rise of religious fundamentalism has also helped to shape the character of neoliberalism. this is because neoliberalism is influenced by the belief that religion is an obstacle to the realization of true freedom and that religion has no place in a truly free market. as well, the view that religion is irredeemably corrupt, and that people need to be liberated from the constraints imposed by religion, helps to explain why neoliberalism is so hostile to other ways of seeing the world, especially islam and hinduism (crouch, 2008, p.167).
