In a world consumed by vampirism, a group of vigilantes band together to rid the world of vampires and their evil. But the idea of the heroic vigilantes is nothing new. For nearly 150 years, legendary demon hunter Abraham Van Helsing has been a force to be reckoned with. Now it is the dawn of the new millennium, and Van Helsing is once again in action. Playing the role of Van Helsing is Hugh Jackman. A self-described “nerd”, Jackman grew up watching the Dracula movies and other Universal horror films. He had long dreamed of playing the classic character. His appearance, combined with his own artistic flair, produce a body of work that is unlike any I’ve seen before. No matter who he plays, he seems to come up with a different performance. He is a captivating combination of disciplined professionalism and an inherent desire to create, all at once.
When asked about the movie, “I feel it’s a sort of Star Trek movie,” says Jackman. “It’s an action-comedy, and it’s set in the future. It’s about creatures who are still very misunderstood, and a human race that is trying to have a say in their own destiny. It’s about a man who has pretty much given up, and hasn’t given in to the fact that they have been hunted to extinction by the other side, and now he’s living on his own. They live in abandoned buildings, leftovers, wherever they can find a place. And it’s good to be there, in that world. It’s good to be out of the rubble of civilisation because we’re not sure when it’s going to come down again.” The film also taps into Jackman’s personal experience. He was born with a heart condition, a congenital defect that hampered his growth and development. The disease required him to undergo multiple surgeries and other procedures that would prove difficult to watch. After taking a hiatus from acting, Jackman sought out proper medical attention. He realized that his condition was more manageable than it had been, and that he’d feel better, stronger, and healthier. So, he returned to acting with a purpose. Like the movie, he says, “Van Helsing is a character who has given up. Maybe what I’m interested in doing is bringing back something that’s good. And if I can do that, then I will feel like I’ve achieved something else, quite simply.”
