umrao jaan is based on the life of the legendary courtesan umrao, who was a favourite of the nawab of lucknow, sujat ali khan. she is the theme of the film that revolves around the nawab’s courtesan, umrao, who is one of the most famous courtesans of her time. the film has been adapted into a play by writer nissim ezekiel, which premiered in lucknow in 1961. umrao jaan is a black-and-white film with colour sequences.
the film begins with the protagonist, umrao jaan, singing about her childhood experiences with her father, zaheer, in his home, her mother roshni, and her brother, jamal. the father demands a greater sacrifice from the daughter, who is afraid to lose her mother. the mother is horrified at this, as she is happy in her home. the father forces umrao to dance with her brother. jamal is sexually harassed by the nawab’s deputy, dilawar khan, who rapes umrao, after which umrao commits suicide. this is the first time that the nawab of lucknow has been depicted in hindi cinema. the nawab was a renowned patron of the arts, and his patronage of umrao jaan (whose real name was rabia khanum) is depicted in the film as a source of much controversy.
when she tries to commit suicide, the nawab’s personal assistant, chagan lal, saves umrao. the nawab is enraged and chides chagan lal, saying that his only heir is a bastard, and therefore he should not be allowed to live. chagan lal denies the charges. later, umrao jaan becomes a courtesan and performs a dance number, dancing with zaheer khan. the nawab is impressed and asks umrao jaan to dance with him. umrao dances to the song, kyun laado gaye, written by s.d. burman. after the dance, umrao jaan is thrown out of the court. the nawab’s son, sultan, comes to pay his respects to the nawab, and to umrao jaan. after this, umrao jaan is asked by sultan to sing a song, which she does. sultan gives umrao jaan a rose and asks her to return to the court in two days time.
