background the first part of this study attempts to gather the necessary data to establish whether three kinematic elements of the wrist are independent or whether the angular motion of one of the joints corresponds to the change in the angular motion of the other two joints. the second part of this study attempts to evaluate the impact of these kinematic elements on the physiological function of the wrist and attempts to establish whether these kinematic elements are good predictors of the pain, stiffness, and mobility. purpose to determine whether the angular motion of the first carpometacarpal (cmc) joint, metacarpophalangeal (mp), or the interphalangeal (ip) joint, measures the kinematics of the other two joints and whether these kinematics are in agreement with previous studies. materials and methods this study was a prospective case series. participants received clinical assessment with the kinematics of machinery (kom) form. the first part of the study determined the reliability, validity, and kinematics of the kom form. the second part of the study compared the kinematics of the cmc, mp, and ip joints to determine whether the kom form provides a reliable and valid means of measuring these three joints. results the first part of the study showed that the kom form had good reliability and validity. the study on the kinematics of the cmc, mp, and ip joints showed a high degree of similarity between the observed and concurrent intra- and inter-observer reliability and between the observed and concurrent validity. the pearson correlation coefficient to compare the kom form with kinematics of the cmc joint with the thumb motion analyzer ranged from 0.83 to 0.99. the pearson correlation coefficient to compare the kom form with kinematics of the mp joint with the humac hand dynamometer ranged from 0.80 to 0.97. conclusion the kom form is a reliable and valid instrument to measure joint kinematics of the mp, cmc, and ip joints. however, the thumb motion analyzer was more reliable than the humac hand dynamometer. the kom form is a reliable and valid instrument to measure joint kinematics of the mp, cmc, and ip joints.
