The good people at PhaseOne have done a great job on Media Pro SE, although it’s worth noting that is a bit like blind men hitting different parts of the elephant and confusing what they are touching as to what it is. The good news is that it is a free alternative to Perfect Browse and Photo Mechanic, which are both also good programs, and in my humble opinion, the best in their class.
It seems that PhaseOne are ignoring the fact that so many users have pointed out the issues with their software being available for Apple’s platform. It’s a shame because PB was a great piece of software before it made this move. I am now using Windows 10 and it’s missing the “Run” button when it comes to these programs. I have to find a special directory in the Windows Drive to find these programs.
phase one also has two very valid reasons for only supporting one camera format of raw files with media pro se. its all based on “we wont compromise our security”. i know that phase one is very concerned about the security of their software, but these companies are in such a strong position that they dont need to be. are you really going to tell your clients, colleagues, and friends not to use your software because theyre in china? if youre concerned about piracy, are you really concerned about people stealing $10,000 of your equipment? does capturing more clients really matter so much?
the bottom line is, youre probably never going to give away your software for free. not even to a company that offers free upgrades for older versions. i find it a bit offensive that phase one wants to protect their core market by charging $100 for a product that isnt even in its next release.
