an all-new music engine powers the musically dynamic levels. while the music here is outstanding, i have to give a big thanks to the artist that did the backgrounds – my favorite ones are the medieval castle level and the neverending deeps, they’re so well designed and executed.
as in rayman origins, rayman, globox, and the tensies make their way through each world, from the bright, colorful, and character-filled worlds of the different dimensions, to the dark and bleak, surrealistic runaway space dimension, and finally to the miraculous dimension, which is filled to the brim with rocks. each world contains a bonus stage, challenges, specific collectables, bonus items, a level-4 powerup, and an extra-difficult challenge that unlocks a new heroic form for you to use throughout the game.
rayman legends includes both single-player and multiplayer options. the online modes are a nice touch – if you’re really itching to compete with your friends (or strangers, if you’re willing to play a game with some random people online), you can play races and challenges against others, or you can duke it out against a fellow rayman character and fight to show who’s the best. the local multiplayer mode allows you to take on a buddy for a quick game of two-players on one keyboard.
as a platform game built around a rockin’ musical theme, rayman legends definitely isn’t lacking in excitement. the on-screen action is bright and colorful, and the animators’ artistry shines throughout. musically, ubisoft montpellier expertly fuses the whimsy of the charming story to an upbeat soundtrack that’s packed with rousing tunes. rayman legends does a particularly good job imitating the charm of the music as well, with the whimsical sample of a bird talking in a way that perfectly captures and conveys the personality and tones of the song. while the music isn’t as powerful and stirring as that of rayman 3 and rayman 2, the music of rayman origins is easily one of the highlights of the series, and rayman legends continues the legacy in almost miraculous fashion.
