even though the film is an adaptation of a comic book, and even though the character of black panther is a descendant of several characters in the marvel comics universe (the original black panther, t’challa; the next black panther, n’kii; and the current black panther, t’challa), black panther has been one of the most successful movies at the box office this year. the film, with a total of $1.
the non-atmos track adds no real improvements over the previous – particularly in the expansive overall mix. many discussions in the theaters suggested the audience found it too loud (i didn’t really notice any problem, and heard no complaints). but overall, the sound design was certainly functional and present.
what initially looked like a character-driven, emotional drama, turned into a petulant, wild action film. i mean, just look at that (in guardians of the galaxy (2014) chris pratt’s star-lord was literally just being thankful to the universe for giving him and his friends a nice, big spaceship. avengers: age of ultron (2015) iron man shows a similar lazy gratitude. specifically, that he “always thought this film would look better.” the frivolity started when the director (joss whedon) remarked that he would have the same last battle as the avengers(2012).
and the amount of ancillary material, features and foreshadowing that was once thought out is now scattered throughout the film. at one point, the characters save the tesseract. but at the end they decide to ignore the impending danger from ultron, which may be the best decision.
