the topic of the book is very good and has a lot of potential. the introduction of the book describes the purposes of a textbook on human resource management. it also covers important features of human resource management. the first chapter is a great review of the basics of hr management. it is not covered in too much detail, but it does a great job of introducing and explaining the concept and the structure of the organization. the chapters are pretty well written but some topics such as metrics, benchmarking, compensation, and salaries are inadequately covered and in need of more attention. most of the data has been taken from the us bureau of labor statistics. the only exception is for the salary information. i would have liked to see more data from other countries and other sources as well. for example, france is known for its practice of using three scales for salary rates. the three scales are as follows: base salary (fixed salary), salary plus incentives or bonus (variable salary), and pay in proportion to performance. this data needs to be included for comparison purposes. in addition, salary surveys conducted in other countries could be used. this data is very important in determining which compensation plan will be the most effective for a company. many employees will not be satisfied with one salary plan over the other. the chapter on performance should also provide more details on performance management than is contained in the text. this section really does not explain performance management. there is a large gap that exists in understanding performance management from a skills and competency point of view. i did not get the impression that the authors were really up to speed in terms of performance management. the text does cover some basic statistical data for the business, but many important pieces of data are missing, including more data on employee turnover and absenteeism.
