first take: let’s start out talking about gemini’s costume design. the movie embraces the bollywood aesthetic that encompasses flashy outfits, bright colors, and hectic choreography. the costumes are a constant joy to watch. from the film’s opening sequence, where we see the men of the film brilliantly dressed in gas masks, neon-colored clothes and weird hats, we are treated to a colorful and spectacular set piece as the trio of male characters tear through the dance competition (there is at least one costume that has “diabetes” spelled out on the clothing). this side of the movie is very light-hearted and fun. continue reading to find out more about the costumes and choreography.
second take: when the film establishes that this is an indian-themed adaptation of a hollywood movie, it immediately understands that we must expect some differences. for instance, the costumes reflect the cultural attire of the characters and the visual reference. what the film immediately shines from that is its design which is a little “off” and that’s because it is set in india, not america. especially noticeable is the clothing choice of sonu sood, who plays the head judge of the competion. sonu has the standard indian clothing attire on and what is more unbelievable is that he is wearing the very white band that is commonly worn by indian judges. the clothes are of the same color as the judges, who should be more concerned with the contestants’ performances.
