origami by children 2003 spotlight is the award-winning work of 4th grade students from billings, montana. “we learned that folding paper can be fun and a great way to exercise our brains and bodies.” –kerry jones, teacher of the origami program. kerry jones’ folding skills captured the imagination of one montana child and the imagination of the entire class.
we are saddened by the news of the passing of leo costello on monday, october 5. a long-time original contributor to origamiusa, leo’s large portfolio of manuscripts and copyright materials for over 40 years was his legacy to the community of origami artists. after a distinguished career at the university of texas at austin, he returned to his alma mater, his beloved home of new york, where he continued to share his art with the world. photo by susan dugan
sunao yamamoto, a long-time member of the origami usa community, was invited to join the institute’s educational staff at the 2003 pacific coast origami convention. the photo on page 3 was taken during a busy moment for sunao and the entire convention staff — sunao’s wife, toshie, poses with a young folder who opened the program in front of the crowd. photo by anthony scoggins and delrosa marshall.
