The seminal work of Parker and Smith included a number of innovations and advances. In 1970, they suggested that an understanding of the role that post-copulatory processes might play in the evolution of polyandry and monogamy, and tried to make some sense of the plethora of sperm forms that have since been discovered. Secondly, they proposed a model for anisogamy and the sex roles of males and females. And last, they suggested that prenuptial and post-nuptial mate choice were facilitated by the size and shape of female genitalia. In their 1972 article, Parker and Smith suggested the importance of post-copulatory processes in reproductive conflict between rival males.
His interest in sexual selection began with his meeting of F Smith in the Department of Zoology, Oxford, in the summer of 1946. When Parker came to Oxford, Smith already had a growing reputation for his research on male reproductive biology. The two exchanged some experimental results in the following years, and it was not until 1949 that Parker met the American biologist RR Baker, who was an authority on the subject of sperm competition. Subsequently, Smith and Baker began to collaborate with Parker in Oxford, a collaboration that continued until the end of his life. Later, Smith and Parker collaborated with the American physiologist V.G.F. Smith, who also co-authored this book with Parker and Baker. Smith also collaborated with the American physiologists Edward L. Bernays and William B. Stanlie on the field of sexual behavior.
Parker and Smith were among the first to describe prenuptial and postnuptial mate choice, and suggested that female genitalia might facilitate sex-typed preferences. In the 1940s, some of their experimental observations argued against those of von Frisch and Grissell, who had interpreted their findings as a result of the general post-copulatory changes which accompany semen storage in females. Specifically, on the basis of their experiments, Parker and Smith proposed that male and female genitalia play different roles in the regulation of sperm competition and the selection of mates. Consequently, Parker and Smith were the first to suggest the existence of a sperm competition system. Parker was a very productive researcher, but he is best known for his seminal contributions on post-copulatory processes, and cryptic female choice. These ideas were first presented in his classic paper with RR Baker and VGF Smith, which was published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B in 1972.
