As befitting their best-known example, Metabolism in practice never reached fruition. But not before a few of its more influential architects – which, by the way, was largely a male group – produced a flurry of utopian designs. Take look at ETC: European Theater of Constructivism, a book that explores the major megastructures devised by Tange and his peers. While several Metabolist projects were finished or under construction at the time of the book, their authors include a score of lesser known modernists that deserve much more attention. Remarkably, the book is also notable for including photographs not only of the ETC megastructures but also that of Banhams own architecture.
Around the same time that his Megastructure book came out, Banham (along with several other prominent architects such as Michael Graves and Archigram co-founder Ken Loach) was commissioned to develop a grandiose plan for a utopian city. In practice, like the Metabolist’s, the Banham megastructure was cut short by the implosion of the British Empire. But not before these two eccentric architects produced a set of designs worthy of our digital age. In the summer of 1976, Banham and a friend drove out to the southwest coast of England. There they found a single slab of rock perched nearly perpendicularly on the edge of the sea. It was a prime example of Rorans jasper cliffs. This jagged edge, Banham realized, had been the defining feature of the coastline for centuries, not to mention the rock slab itself. But now the coast was vanishing. Historic monuments like Stonehenge and the causeway to the holy island of Iona had been transformed into the world’s first great megastructures.
According to Banham, the whole coast was sinking at an astonishing rate. The parish of Berwickshire alone would be completely inundated within two or three decades. It was time to build a landscape with the power to withstand the slow but steady flow of time. The following year, Banham produced these drawings: seductive images of cities of the mind with galleries, wide roadways and stairs that climb to impressive heights.
And here is where Banhams story branches off from the the Metabolist’s. While the Metabolist’s called for a transparent, mobile architecture, Banhams idea is to build cities that are massive and steadily more permanent. If the Metabolists wanted to overcome time, Banhams cities were meant to hold fast even as the earth and seas slowly churned them into oblivion. Still, a number of Banhams ideas in his scheme could be said to embody the spirit of Metabolism. Those ideas – buoyant, open, dynamic – were to prove much more enduring than the factory-like modules of the Metabolists.
