in the previous article we discussed mark doyle who founded and ran the jazzfm label. he was also the founder of the hed kandi label. his name is also the title of all the hed kandi compilations. the “hed kandi” label began in 1997 as a hed kandi compilation, but later grew to include separate projects. the style of music can be best described as a fusion of jazz, soul, house, techno and other styles. mark doyle has created compilations full of great music, and this 1997 collection has always been one of the best, despite the style of music being very different to most hed kandi compilations. standout tracks: gwen mcrae 1989 (law bangs her) (maggot mix) by gwen mcrae, what you see is what you get by mike tompkins, superstition by alice russell and music, watch me, by denny thrist. the rather esoteric title track by denny thrist was from album music, watch me that was not released until 2002.
back to love is the first volume of hed kandi compilations which were not to be released on vinyl. originally intended to be a series of 12 compilations for the label, this series only consisted of 5 volumes. although there were to be an additional 3 volumes, i believe that the hed kandi concept and the music on this first volume are still a good introduction to the style of music that is spread throughout the label. the label would go on to release 15 albums and 4 eps in the same style as back to love. despite the lack of structure of the book, this is a very enjoyable compilation. what it shows is that there is no mistaking the hed kandi style of music. whether its the similarity between the album covers, the use of house beats, the sleeve filipinis, the use of theatrics or the bandit-like hed kandi figures, the labels approach is quintessentially hed kandi. standout tracks: get it on by terry callier, hold on by dennis bovell, everywhere without you by lorraine feather, we are the rhythm and the beat (1965 mix) by the human league and the return of mercury (1991 mix) by de la soul, the best tracks on this album are the best of the hed kandi catalogue, as well as some of the side projects of mark doyle.
