Calculate Room Acoustic Measurements is an automated Excel spreadsheet designed to help you to calculate room acoustic measurements for home theaters.
The only cells in which you need to enter data are in blue (length, width and height of your home theater). There are several aspects of creating a room with good acoustics for a surround-sound setup. Two of these aspects are the room’s dimensions and where the listener is sitting. This calculator will help you with both items.
It will also calculate where the frequency peaks and nulls are in the room. These areas should be taken into account when choosing your seating positions because these areas will have a different sound to them and can ruin the audio experience for the listener.

We have been using SRS Audio for several years, but we had to change our supplier of audio components due to the constant problems with software and hardware. After SRS Audio went bankrupt, we decided to give CalcRoomAcoustics a try. We are happy to say that CalcRoomAcoustics did not only solve all of our problems but it has also made our rooms sound better than what we had achieved before. For a home theater with 5.1 multichannel, the listener should be sat at least 20 cm to the speakers. If you would like to listen to the bass speakers from the front of the room, then you may need to move the listener forward as the distance to the center of the theater is less then if the listener would be sat directly in front of the speakers.
The distance is measured in cm and not in inches.
If you have 7.1 Surround, the distance between the front speakers and the listener is the same.
If you have to distance the front speakers, then you need to know the size of your theater, in order to calculate the distance correctly.
The distance between the left and right channels should be exactly same.
If the distance between the left and right channels is too big, there will be a noticable distortion in the audio.
If the listener is too far from the front left channel, the impact of the front speakers will be dampened and will not be reproduced correctly.
If the listener is too far from the front right channel, the impact of the rear speakers will be dampened and will not be reproduced correctly.
If you have a 5.1 Surround, the distance between the left and right speakers is the same as the distance between the front and back speakers.
If you have 7.1 Surround, the distance between the left and right speakers is the same as the distance between the front and back speakers.
If the listener is too far from the front left and the front right speaker, they will be out of sync and the audio will distort.
If the listener is too far from the back left and the back right speakers, they will be out of sync and the audio will distort.
If you have more than one bass speakers, you should place them around the listener to provide better bass performance.
If you have more than one 5.1 Surround speaker, you should place them around the listener to provide better surround sound performance.
