Additionally, circuits can be implemented to generate a higher voltage for supplying analog circuits. One such circuit is a buck converter. While the system voltage supplied to the Pentium® processor may be adequate, for example, 3.3V or 5V, the system voltage can be higher, for example, 12V, 16V, or 20V. For such higher voltage applications, the 3.3V and 5V voltages are often insufficient to power other circuits in the IC that require a higher voltage supply.

When integrated circuits are manufactured, the higher voltage regulator is included in the IC and is implemented using semiconductor process features. As a result, the higher voltage regulator is located in the same area as other components of the IC.
