In the face of these pressures, the men of ourcommand were to learn the art of war as infantry,in a new kind of service, where there was no rest,no consultation of counsel, nothing in the way ofnecessities for the brigade commanders who had theburden of their own command, and where the Generalwho held the field was without rails, without horses, andalmost without commands. This was the battle ofPittsburg Landing the 15th of April 1862. We werewithout the means of taking the offensive, but wewere to learn how to fight as infantry.

Owing to the shortness of our ammunition, General Williamsand the brigade commander, Col. Frederick Steele, had tosend out the front of their advance rapidly, thatthey might not be involved in a seriousengagement. As the country was somewhatbroken, a considerable portion of my commandhad to bear the double burdens of a fight andadvancing. As the command was putting up intrenchments, I was sent down to the railroad, toplace my command in order to receive supplies.
