The good visual rendering in Darktable is accurate, and Darkroom and Exposure are straightforward and easy to use. The new calibration support in Darkroom is great, and is really does make the difference for me in controlling noise, color, and whites on my images. The camera manufacturer can create an inexpensive camera with good image quality, but it’s the post production that makes the difference. Darkroom and the Camera Raw in Lightroom help, but if you don’t know how to post you will always be behind. I’ve always worked in darkness, and I believe it helps me get more out of the studio processor and post production. I’ve now moved into the new MediaPro 9, as it does a lot more than any of the other software I use. I’m guessing the next version of this software may be completely redesigned. I’ve also recently bought PhotoScout Pro, which will also hopefully provide another reference for controlled post production. The future of visual rendering will be a user centered software. I’m willing to bet on it, as I have been, and hope that it will happen soon. In the meantime, Darktable for the Post, and PhotoScout for reference.

The basic features of Elements are very nice, and it also has a lot of potential as a dSLR tool, but the workflow would be too unwieldy (and expensive) for most people to use. Corel PhotoRAW does a nice job, and allows you to add features later. However, a dSlR based tool would allow you to quickly create dSLR quality images, and then add in and fine tune based on what you see. Corel would also benefit from an Android and iOS app, and Adobe would benefit from listening.

If you want to enhance the lighting in an image, the first step is to manually select a color in the image. All of the other tools provided in Photoshop can be used to make changes to the lighting in an image. This includes using a Levels tool to transform the exposure of the image. You can also use Gradient Map to make adjustments to the shadows and highlights.
