There’s quite easily going to be a quibbling over which is better for a particular task but better for what? Given a particular set of photographs it’s common for photographers to run into problems and truly need a complete understanding of everything digital photo-editing and any software could be used for that. However I’d say that Adobe Photoshop is better for more professional photographers – while Lightroom can do a lot of the same things as Photoshop most of the time it is better suited as a job aid, e.g., as a light volume weight for images that are going to be shared to social networks.
To give you a sense of how powerful the tools in Photoshop are, I’m going to use a photo I took and heavily edited in Photoshop. At the end of the process, I export the file into JPEG and save it out. In Adobe Camera Raw I uncheck the “Make File Only” box and then enter “Crop Image” and the image is exported once again. Later I put the file into Lightroom and make one more Photoshop edit, adjust the colors, adjust the highlights, and save it as a RAW file. Later I put it into Photoshop again and save it out as a JPEG. So, in one hour of work, I went from a photo I took to a file that has just been imported directly into Photoshop again and has been adjusted.
