In general, in magnetic disc apparatus of this type, information is recorded and reproduced by a rotary head which is supported in contact with the surface of a magnetic disc. In order to improve the recording density, it has been suggested to employ a multichamber system, which is arranged to record and reproduce information in concentric areas defined at different circumferential positions on the magnetic disc. By this multichamber system, the length of a non-recording area provided on the magnetic disc can be reduced. However, in the case where the magnetic disc is used for recording and reproducing information, it has been proposed to extend the recording/reproducing period of the non-recording area so as to compensate for the period during which the recording/reproducing head is brought into contact with the magnetic disc.
In order to achieve a recording density which is substantially equivalent to that obtainable with a single chamber magnetic disc system, such extended non-recording period of the magnetic disc used in the multichamber magnetic disc system is provided so that the area on which the recording and/or reproducing head is brought into contact with the magnetic disc is extended, that is to say, the area of the magnetic disc is extended in a circumferential direction.
In order to allow the recording/reproducing head to be quickly separated from the magnetic disc, there is provided a floating type of recording/reproducing head. In case of the floating type of recording/reproducing head, the recording and/or reproducing head is supported by an air flow created around the head so that the head can be floated above the surface of the magnetic disc.
In a multichamber magnetic disc system, the recording/reproducing head is moved at a high speed in the direction of radius of the magnetic disc so as to scan the recording/reproducing heads across a plurality of different circumferential areas on the magnetic disc. For this reason, there is created a plurality of air flows around the recording and/or reproducing heads, which flows with different azimuthal velocities.
