About Charles S. Leopold (1884 – 1953)

For what it’s worth, here’s a Charles S. Leopold as far as I can tell:

About Charles S. Leopold (1884 – 1953)

Charles Shulman Leopold was born on February 28, 1884 in Brooklyn, New York. Charles Leopold studied music from an early age and graduated from the Mannes School of Music as a composition student. He studied with Joseph Dunham. Around this time, his family moved to New Haven, Connecticut, which was home to Yale University, of which Leopold would later receive his Bachelor of Arts degree.

Leopold’s early professional success was attained in a number of venues, including the Chicago Musical College, where he studied under Bernard Heinzerling; with the Boston String Quartet, a group assembled by a former pupil of Leopold’s, Leonard Bernstein; and with Hugo Zinnecker. He wrote numerous unpublished works. In the 1920s and 1930s, Leopold was head of music for the vaudeville circuit.

Leopold also taught at the Mannes School of Music from 1920 to 1947, and became an instructor at the Eastman School of Music, where he taught composition for forty-five years. He was also a member of the New England Conservatory, where he was director of composition from 1925 to 1940. Leopold was active as a composer, arranger, teacher and promoter of New York musical life. He wrote an important textbook, Principles of Musical Composition, which was used by generations of composition students. In 1918, he created The New School Ensemble and served as its director for thirty years. From 1931 until his death, he was musical director of the Federal Music Project.

Leopold is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven, Connecticut.

From a bio at the United States National Archives:

Leopold exhibited a remarkable capacity for composition and for teaching and musical administration. He was the outstanding teacher of composition at the Eastman School of Music from 1925 until his retirement in 1947. He also served as president of the League of Composers from 1939 to 1941.

As a composer, Leopold was instrumental in the
