Two Arabic manuscripts of the Kitab al-Najdz (Book of Diagrams) depict a large and beautifully illuminated astronomical diagram showing the passing of the sun, moon, and planets through the heavens. It is generally thought that the Sun of Gnosis originated in the Maghreb, especially Algiers in Algeria, and entered the Sufi brotherhoods through the hands of numerous Sufi teachers such as Ali ibn Abi Talib, Hujr ibn ‘Adiy al-Hujr, A’sudi and others. Another hypothesis argues that the Sun of Gnosis originated in the Far East and was known in Persia in the 10th century.
Even the wide distribution of this book cannot be explained by a straightforward diffusion of the doctrines it contains, but rather by the spiritual-surgical milieu and the uses to which these doctrines could be put by diverse masters, whose writings were scattered throughout the Arabian Peninsula. The basic tenet of the Shams al-Ma’arif or the Sun of Gnosis-subtleties of gnosis is adopted in the writings of Ibn al-Farid, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Ibn al-Arabi, Walid al-Rukun, Abu Bakr ibn ‘Anbari, Al-Mahdi, and others.
The Shams al-Ma’arif was brought to Europe by the latter in its French translation.

The earliest known translation of the Kitab al-Kubra into a Western language was by the French orientalist Auguste Mariette in association with an early 20th-century British translator and with the assistance of a Syrian Christian priest from Aleppo who knew Arabic. The Mariette translation was published inand then as a translation with some additions and variants, the 1866 edition of the translation had 2,000 copies, which increased up to 4,000 copies by.
Although Mariette’s translation, which was published in the 1880s, was one of the first translations of the book into any language, it does not correspond to the most reliable versions of the text. The most extensive and accurate
