A Barberpole effect is created by applying the sum of two delays to a signal. Each of these delayed versions is referred to as a “hair”. The crossfade algorithm is imperfect, so some pitch-offset errors occur due to this. When the hair crossfades between the two delayed versions, a mismatch is introduced. This mismatch creates pitchshifting when the pitch is low.
Generally the Barberpole effect creates a “cliff” like pitchshifting by eliminating the exact quarter notes.
Tip: I got it to work correctly by playing with the delay settings very slowly. I had to do this for all the stages, but that’s the best solution I could find for the moment.

This type of flange is very easy to implement, but the crossfade algorithm won’t work 100% great yet (I’m still trying to improve it).

What’s New In?
Barberpole flangers have been around for years, but the modern ones are very flexible and often feature a width parameter, the ratio between which is used to create a “Barberpole Effect”: With a width of 0.9 the flanger will transition between two notes pretty much continuously. With a width of 1.0 all the transitions will be perfectly smooth and rapid. With a value of less than 1.0 the transition would be started or stopped after a while and the loops will continue longer and longer, each with the next note.
If you have different notes to flange over and want the gaps between the notes to be a little more short (and thus louder), you could use a value of 1.0 or 1.2, even 1.5. (as an example, use 1.4 instead of 1.0)
1.0 = Continuous, not fading
1.1 = Faded out, but smooth transition
1.2 = Faded out, very quick transition
1.3 = Faded out, very short transition
1.4 = Short burst of transient notes
1.5 = Long burst, but not too long
1.6 = Long burst, but very long
1.7 = Square wave type of output (White noise)
1.8 = Random (not repeatable)
1.9 = Random (not repeatable)
1.0 – 1.9 = Random (not repeatable)
Let’s get into coding this beast!
There are many flanger implementations around, but I haven’t found any Barberpole flangers, so in the end I made my own. It’s a bit wonky, but the code is very solid for this type of flanger (you can also use a Midi CC or Channel Strip flanger – but I haven’t tested that, and I’m lazy)
So in short: The flanger seems to work, but the crossfade is a bit wonky, so if you really want it, I could do another version. ?
OK, but what’s it do?
You can use the flanger between 2 notes, but it would be a bit more simple to have it flange between 2 audio sources, like using it on a Reverb or Delay effect. But let’s have it flange between 2 notes at first.
