# THE BASICS OF EMBOSSING

The _embellish_ function uses the _scatter_ brush to make an image look like it was drawn by hand in ink. The brush gives a subdued appearance to an image by applying a rough effect without destroying its integrity. It works on any layer, and you can change the size and hardness of the brush effect at any time.

To use the embellish function, follow these steps:

1. **Select the spot or area where you want to apply the effect.**

Use the techniques in the earlier section, “Selecting Layers,” to select a specific area in your image.

2. **Choose Enhance⇒Fill & Stroke⇒Emblem in the Edit menu.**

The Emblems palette opens, as shown in Figure 6-8.

Instead of an object like an ornament, the brush tool adds a set of hatch patterns to a particular image area.

3. **Start drawing with the brush tool by painting the sketch area.**

With the paint bucket selected, you can begin drawing with the point tool (set to an average-size brush at 2 pixels).

First draw a few lines that form a pattern. Then start connecting the lines with short lines, blurs, and other variations.

4. **When you finish drawing, press the spacebar or click the button in the dialog box to close the tool.**

You can close the tool by pressing Esc, but you also can use the button or spacebar — whichever method you prefer.

To change the brush size or hardness while you are embellishing, right-click the tool and choose a new brush size or hardness. The following steps help you embellish using the brush tool.

5. **Select the spot or area where you want to apply the effect.**

Use the techniques in the earlier section, “Selecting Layers,” to select a specific area in your image.

6. **Open the Brushes panel.**

Step 1 – Import the Photo

Open Photoshop Elements and then open the photo of the flower you want to work on.

Make sure you are using the best resolution for your photo in order to get the best quality.

Click the Upload button at the top of the screen.

On the next screen, click File > Import.

In the Import window, select all the files in the folder you want to import to the Layers panel and click Import.

Click OK.

Step 2 – Convert it to Black and White

Click the first Adjustment Layer.

From the menu bar, click Adjustments > Desaturate.

In the Desaturate dialog box, select a middle gray value from 60 to 100 and click OK.

If you like, change the value to 75 and click OK.

In Photoshop Elements, you can give a Layer a name and set its visibility. Give it the name “Layer 1” and make it visible.

Step 3 – Add a Gradient

To add a gradient to your flower, first click on the Gradient Tool on the tool bar and choose Linear Gradient.

Click on the top of the screen and then drag a straight line so that it fits perfectly on the flower.

Fill it with a gray color.

Click on the top of the screen again and drag a gradient from the outer area of the flower towards the center.

Step 4 – Add a Fillet

To add a rounded corner to the inside of the flower, first click on the first layer.

In the Layers panel, press Ctrl+T so that the painting toolbar becomes visible.

Type Fillet and click OK.

Select the pen tool and draw a rough circle.

You can use the Pattern Matching tool to find areas of an image that resemble a specific pattern. You can then mask out these areas.
The Puppet tool allows you to deform an image, using a variety of curves.

Using a list of characters as a string in TSQL

I’m using an ARRAY in TSQL and need to convert it to a STRING. Here’s what I tried:

The output is “a”b”c” but not “abc” — as I’d expect. It’s clear that the internal loop of the main query is not reflecting the changes to @str.
Two questions:

How can I get this to work?
Is this guaranteed to work? If not, what would be a safe alternative?

The @ str variable is not cleared on each new round of your loop.
