When we see trees damaged by the snow, we react and suggest that the next step is to call a certified arborist or consulting arborist or check your local Utility Billing department with the power company to find out if you need to pay for a snow removal service for the winter. Every province requires homeowners to pay for snow removal on private property, so the best thing is just to call around until you find out which services are covered by your homeowners insurance policy.
We find it best to inspect trees with a clear view of the canopy and a direct line of sight from the ground. Once the branch is broken the tree will begin to sway to regain equilibrium and that is when the chance of damage increases. If you have an orchard, then it is important to inspect trees in the orchard with the branches near the middle of the tree. Heavy snow accumulation will cause the trees on the perimeter of the orchard to lean with their arms stretched outward.
Much of the damage is finished with a quick visual inspection, but during heavy snow accumulation it may be more prudent to bring a tape measure and timed photographs. Once the branch is broken out, look for bowing of the trunk, split bark, shifted roots and obvious branches that are not holding weight. Unhealthy limbs that look like a whip will sway back and forth. Sometimes with windblown snow accumulation, it is hard to tell which limbs are injured until they begin to break and fall.
