6. CommentToday, Religious Right activist Janet Porter delivered a powerful testimony at the US Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Justice Hearing on human trafficking. The hearing, titled “Exploitation of Children and Adolescents: Human Trafficking in the United States,” was held to discuss the role of state and local government in combating the trafficking of children and teenagers.
Porter’s testimony focused on the case of young mothers who were arrested in 2008 after their children were removed from their custody because they were “deceased.” (An investigation later revealed that the children were actually living with their grandmother in Texas.)
Porter addressed the case of a mother “who was arrested and convicted by the state of Louisiana for simple murder of her child.” She called the case “an egregious miscarriage of justice.”
“Through her selfless willingness to give her children over to social workers who, in turn, placed them in state foster care, this mother engaged in one of the most important functions performed by any parent,” Porter said. “She cared for and nurtured her babies.”
And, she noted, the children were not harmed. “Some social workers told me that the foster child only slept an average of three hours a night, yet nobody — not even the children — suffered any ill effects.”
“The adults who are responsible for the mistreatment and abuse of these children do not deserve to see daylight,” Porter said. “But at this moment, we have no one to look out for these children’s interests, their rights, and their interests.”
