Cubemania is a 1962 Mexican comedy film, written and directed by Miguel M. Delgado and starring Pedro Armendáriz, Carmen Molina and Armando Silvestre. The film is a remake of the Argentine film El mensaje de Valentina (1961).
Pedro Armendáriz plays a good-hearted and clumsy man named Raul who is trapped in the factory of a despotic and miserly landlord. Raul wants to win the affection of the landlord’s beautiful daughter Valentina. He is taken under the wing of a servant, a former magician who has a penchant for practical jokes, and is taught how to carry out pranks and illusions to impress Valentina.

“Ma’r-ta mee-roe” is a song that was performed by the British rock band the Clash during their 1977 European tour. It was the B-side of the band’s single “Feeling Good”. The recording was released on their album London Calling in July of the same year.
It was written by vocalist Joe Strummer, lead guitarist Mick Jones and drummer Terry Chimes, and was inspired by Strummer’s cousin, Daniel Boulanger, who was killed in a car accident in a remote area of the Mojave Desert in California in 1976. The song is the third of four songs on London Calling about loss.
The song was performed in a strange, hoarse and monotone way on the tour, something that was again proven by their appearance on the documentary No bric a brac from 1977 on “Three Minute Rumor”, which was recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. The song was a live favourite and was a part of several live sets.
In 1998, the song was put back on the CD as one of 12 bonus tracks.
Writing and recording
In an interview with Jon Savage in NME in November 1977, lead singer Joe Strummer, in a reference to former member Mick Jones, stated that, “I’ve got a song called Ma’r-ta mee-roe” – “Ma means ‘die’ in Arabic and ‘Ma’r-ta mee-roe’ means you’re not forgotten. It’s just an argument with ourselves – you can’t stay here.”
The basis for the song was an accident that Strummer’s cousin, Daniel Boulanger, suffered in 1976 in a crash in a remote area of the Mojave Desert in Southern California. In total four people were killed when his car swerved into the path of a tractor-trailer driven by a local woman named Hazel Jones on La Paz-Tahquitz Rd. Although she was charged with hit-and-run and eventually convicted and sentenced to prison, she was also sentenced for “leaving the scene of a fatal accident.”
Reception
NME magazine gave the song a short review, describing it as a “heavy” song and finishing with “a vitriolic send-up of rock stars, among whom the Clash are particularly fastidious for the illogical.”
