Part III – The Units of Order
(Part 3 of 6) In this post, I would like to discuss the units I think have the most support in the Classic World of Darkness setting and how they work in combat.
Units like vamps, werewolves and lycanthropes have a faction when they are targeted for death. These factions have a will to live which results in a number of levels of HP. At the top of the pile are human units, but below them and all the way to the bottom is mythos, supernatural units. Below mythos there is “other” and, after that, there is hallowed ground and optional rules.
What does this mean?
Well, if you are inflicted with vampirism, for example, there are benefits and costs to the character based on that. This is part of another concept I like calling “totem”. The standard Vampire rules apply to a character, but the character gets to keep some ties to their weirdness. Each character with vampirism gets their own totem value. If vampirism removes a character’s humanity and they lose a level, that totem will suffer a level loss as well. If a character with vampirism loses more than three tiers, the character becomes a mythos vampire and loses totem all together. These rules tell the story, and I like this approach to defining units. Take the unit of rule the player gets if he loses his humanity, right into his will to live. (figure out some way of the totems to step up the challenge).
In this case, those mentioned as the most valuable, powerful and charismatic are also the most diverse, since they include a number of different characters.
