Rheum is an upcoming take on the The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild-esque open world action-adventure games set in an industrial fantasy world. Here you will explore a vast open world, and interact with an immersive world-based economy that’s brimming with unique features and depth.
The Game Rheum’s main focus is to do away with the distinction between player & environment, and to move interaction to a more abstract, metagame-playful and communication-based level.
Rheum’s Character Paradigm
Rheum is envisioned as a game whose main focus is the purely visceral experience of interaction between player and character. The main interaction paradigm focuses on the usage of a character’s unique abilities to empower and enhance the player’s agency. The player is not only tasked with solving puzzles with the characters, but it is also important to use these abilities in the right ways to be able to overcome various dangers that may confront the player. This means that the most important role in the game is not to be the player, but rather to be the character.
While the character will of course remain central to the game, the player will also be able to select their own character in a variety of classes. This way the character can be tailored to the player’s ability or preference.
The character can wield a variety of weapons that are tied to its class. Each class can wield different types of weapons and these are broadly separated in their characteristics, such as – by default – their melee and ranged abilities, or user controllable. Each class will thus be characterized by a limited set of weapons that it can wield.
The combat is encounter based, and unlike most games, all players of a battle will always battle with the same character. The player will therefore have to work with the available character to adapt to the situation.
A character’s basic abilities are free to be used in any order. Abilities will always have a direct impact on the gameplay dynamics at hand, and most abilities have a small effect that can either strengthen or weaken the player when used.

Paper Beast is a deliberately minimalist yet highly detailed, long-term visual exploration game inspired by the classic Atari “Space Invaders” game.
