Retrieving date from a file without loading entire file to memory
I have an old python 2.7.4 script that does the following:
Reads a file into memory
Iterates over the contents of the file and performs some operation on the value at each line
Saves the contents of the file to a new file
All this works very well, but I would like to refactor it in order to improve performance (in Python 3.6).
As a first step, I tried to read the file line by line using readline(). Unfortunately, this results in memory usage and execution time increasing.
Another way of reading the file would be to use the built-in function file(). This function works fine but the problem is that it loads the entire file to memory before any processing can take place.
I haven’t found a solution for both issues.
Does anyone know a way to improve performance by reducing memory usage (if possible) or can you suggest an alternative method?
