1980s
In 1980, Autodesk was created by Alvy Ray Smith and six of his former colleagues from the graduate design program at the University of Utah. The company was initially called Alvy Ray Smith Research, Inc. (ARSI), named after Smith’s wife Alvy Ray. The company name was later changed to Autodesk after the company’s first product, a CAD program called Microstation, which was released in 1981. Smith became Autodesk’s President, with its first public demonstration in 1983.
The next year, the company released AutoCAD as a Mac shareware program. The following year, it was released on the Apple II platform, and in 1987, Autodesk acquired Raytek, a firm specializing in vector-graphics editing software and Macintosh printers. In 1991, Autodesk released AutoCAD for Windows 3.5. The following year, AutoCAD got an extra dimension with the introduction of AutoCAD Map 3D, the first 3D modeling application.
In 1994, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT, a simplified version of AutoCAD. In 1995, Autodesk released the first release of AutoCAD R14. In 1996, Autodesk added AutoCAD 2000, a version of AutoCAD for the PC platform. In 1998, AutoCAD got the next generation of the AutoCAD platform, AutoCAD 2000. The year before, AutoCAD 2D was also released as a Windows version. In 2000, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2001. The following year, the company released AutoCAD Rendering Software.
In 2001, Autodesk released AutoCAD XP and AutoCAD Xpress, a new version of AutoCAD for Windows. The same year, a Windows version of AutoCAD 2D was also released. Also in 2001, AutoCAD got AutoCAD Architecture, a plug-in for the Eureka program, which allowed users to convert an AutoCAD drawing into a CAD product for the architectural industry. AutoCAD Activation Code was first released in November 1982 as an add-on to AutoDesk Inventor. It was not compatible with the earlier types of AutoDesk applications and was not marketed as a stand-alone package. It was developed by Dassault Systemes as part of the first generation of its Dassault Systèmes products. Microsoft acquired Autodesk on January 1, 2005 for $2.35B. Autodesk’s products were delivered under the Autodesk brand. The release of Autodesk 2010 was referred to as Autodesk 2010, and subsequent releases of Autodesk 2010 are released as Autodesk 2011. Autodesk 2015 is referred to as Autodesk 2015. A BBC3 documentary about the changing world of TV production has been nominated for an RTS award at the Royal Television Society’s Craft and Design Awards.
This Week is the first UK TV drama series to come out of BBC3’s new film-making arm, Film4 Productions. Commissioned by new BBC Controller of BBC Drama Danny Cohen, the six-part series will be shown on BBC2 this autumn. The programme will be the second to come from Film4 Productions, a new strand of the BBC that is set up to provide drama and comedy to BBC2 and BBC3. The strand was launched this year as a response to rising viewer demand for character-driven drama and comedy.
The RTS Awards are the UK’s only awards ceremony celebrating the art and design of television, in every aspect of production, and take place in London at the House of Commons on 16 April 2005.
Film4 Productions are celebrating the nomination by giving away free copies of the series to BBC staff, past and present.
Shot in the former BFI and BBC Southbank film studios in central London, this week’s series features Sky News anchorman Nick Pollard in his first BBC series. It tells the stories of five individuals, representing a range of living situations, reflecting different worlds, and showing how different people are affected by war, terrorism, and modern life.
