On a sparkling morning at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the fire rocket—the spaceship —slips its restraining wires and walks away. When the heavy capsule of Mercury spacecraft No. 114, named Freedom, is airborne, the yellow-and-white chute on top of the rocket will track the course that the spacecraft will fly.

Nearly 70 years ago on May 24, 1962, a NASA team headed by Robert R. Gilruth (shown here with Geraldyn Skier in 1962) was under tremendous pressure to complete its yearlong space shot. The Mercury-Atlas 9 mission needed to fly in a very short period of time to try and beat an unmanned Russian spacecraft’s (by-the-sculpted-earrings marked) one-year orbital mission, as envisioned by the Soviet chief engineer Sergei Korolyov—and expected to be named the first orbital-capable manned spacecraft.

As space historian Robert Sheaffer points out in his book The Space Log: “What were the chances that one nation’s victory could be consummated—and there was at least one indication that Stalin and Kruschev shared that view—with another nation’s spaceship entering orbit first in eleven months? Even allowing for the massive scale of the project, it seemed virtually impossible. In that case, Apollo probably would be the last rather than the first U.S. to orbit the Earth.” Even the Russian space program’s development was under enormous pressure, with the ability and will to utilize the cosmonautics technology as a counter to the American dominance that had ensued in the first half of the 50’s with Project Mercury.

The Russians, though, while attempting their stolen attempt to beat the Americans in orbit, were far from fully developed in such areas as manned spacecraft.
