Autodesk recently announced they were acquiring 123D Design. And while I love the design community, the AutoCAD situation is unfortunate. Autodesk has repeatedly ignored the creative community, AutoCAD will not be opened up for the 3D design community, and making proprietary CAD apps that are as popular as Autodesk’s will lock us out of the non-proprietary CAD market.
I just don’t understand it, but I also cannot convince Autodesk to release AutoCAD for non-proprietary CAD apps.
The fundamentals
Autodesk’s plan to buy 123D Design has been a troubled affair, with the Autodesk CEO even admitting that Autodesk has “done a horrible job” of it. If Autodesk buys 123D Design, what does that mean for the Autodesk products that have been built with 123D Design’s data? And what happens to the Creative Cloud service? Is it all bought by Autodesk, or does Autodesk keep and add value to 123D Design’s data?
We have seen Autodesk change or discontinue products before, and every time I think it won’t happen again. I just can’t see how Autodesk can keep selling CAD apps as they have been. I have no desire to spend time writing my own AutoCAD features if Autodesk will just lock me out of it at any time. It is a dangerous precedent to set, and I’m afraid that Autodesk’s acquihire of 123D Design will be the last Autodesk app I can use.
I cannot force Autodesk to take a risk and release AutoCAD for the Creative Cloud community (or do it themselves) and that is why I will be starting a Change.org petition today to convince Autodesk to open up AutoCAD for the creative community.
