How can I configure XSLT for.NET so that it can run properly on Mono/IIS?
I have an XSLT file that I need to run on Mono / IIS.
The file works just fine using lxml.etree but when I try to run it using IIS’s built-in module it dies on the line that uses xsl:attribute / xsl:value-of. The error I get in the IIS event log is:
System.InvalidOperationException: Internal parser error, /System/Net/HTTP/Context.cs:line 68: The ‘$’ character, hexadecimal value 0x24, cannot be used in a string literal or other binding expression. This character is reserved for use as a Boolean data type by systems such as JScript, VBScript, and CLR scripting interfaces.
It seems to be related to the XSLT processor that IIS uses, which uses Javascript in the background.
How do I tell the XSLT processor to use UTF-8 without using the @ prefixes? I have already tried using the encoding in the XSLT file, but it does not make a difference.
Is there any way to configure it to work?

If the only problem is the XSLT processor, you could do one of the following:
Use Saxon 9, which is now a Free/Open Source XSLT processor that runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and Solaris. The newest version (9.6) is available for download from their site.
Use IronPython, which works with Mono and IIS.
Use Java 1.5, which is compatible with Saxon 9 and is typically used together with Java application servers.
Use the current version (11.0) of Saxon, which is also free/open source and has better XPath 1.0/1.1 compatibility than Saxon 9. Saxon is now available from their site and from Novell’s Web installer (see below).
Alternatively, if you are using.NET 3.5 or later, you can use the.NET Framework XSLT provider (and Saxon 9):
