OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY Objective: To analyze and describe the functional capacity and community living skills of the residents with traumatic brain injury (TBI) in nursing homes. METHODS: A descriptive research, quantitative approach with qualitative inquiry as theoretical framework. The technique used was the list, carried out at six institutions in the state of São Paulo in Brazil. A total of 48 residents were interviewed. RESULTS: The sample was composed of 29 (60.4%) women, and 19 (39.6%) men. The mean age of participants was 73.67 years. It was observed the existence of a lack of orientation in the community in 21 (43.7%) and 19 (39.6%) residents and dependence on help in eight (16.7%) and 11 (22.9%) residents; and the need for supervision in the use of the toilet in 22 (45.8%) and 20 (41.7%) residents. A majority of the residents (58.3%) acquired their functional capacities without the need to train. CONCLUSION: The study participants were relatively well preserved, with good functional capacity, showing acquired skills.
