Hi Rob, Thanks for your kind words – they mean a lot! I should have made clear that I don’t think making a WordPress page would be productive. I don’t expect to be producing a solution manual for as long as it takes me to complete Apostol. I currently have a spreadsheet in Google Docs (in my profile) which contains the solutions to all the exercises in Apostol. I like the idea of a “solutions manual”, but I am not in a position where I would be willing to devote all my time to giving it a go.
Rori, this website has been very helpful for me in my struggle to complete my first year of Calculus I! I’m just starting calculus II and before starting the class, I thought I would just try and figure out the “vectors” of Apostol before I started the class. I don’t have much of a background in math, but after reading many posts and comments on this website, I feel confident that I could finish the class now!
Thanks for the kind words. Thanks also for the help given through this site. It really is the easiest site on the Internet to get help on calculus. I am working my way through Apostol and Spivak, and reading these posts has given me a great headstart in the process.
For the benefit of the layman, I think it worth talking about the general process used in every textbook I’ve seen in physics. It’s very common to start a new section of the book by asking if anyone has seen this solution, or whether this solution is necessarily unique, etc. Sometimes in the back of the book there is a statement of this fact, and sometimes not. When it’s included, it’s there for the benefit of the reader. When it’s not included, the question is pointless because the answer is “no, of course not”.
The problem you are referring to in the “Calculus” book is Part I Problem 10. The solution is given in the “General Solution to Part I” section. You should be able to find it by scrolling down to “Problem 10” which is about page 352.
In case it helps, Apostol has a solution manual available for his first volume which is included in all editions of his first calculus book. It’s not the same as this solution manual, but it’ll get you started.
I would begin by reading every problem in APOSTOL CALCULUS, VOL. 1 CHAPTER 1 . I would then switch to the exercises in APOSTOL CALCULUS, VOL. 2 CHAPTER 1 . I would also check the solutions to the problems in Apostol’s APOSTOL CALCULUS, VOL. 2 CHAPTER 2 .
When I have completed these exercises, I would then move on to the exercises in Apostol’s APOSTOL CALCULUS, VOL. 2 CHAPTER 2 , but only after I had done the exercises in Apostol’s APOSTOL CALCULUS, VOL. 2 CHAPTER 2 .
This way, one learns the basic strategy before one jumps head first into Apostol’s material. If there is time remaining after doing the exercises in Apostol’s APOSTOL CALCULUS, VOL. 2 CHAPTER 2 , then I would get around to Apostol’s APOSTOL CALCULUS, VOL. 2 CHAPTER 3 .
thanks for reading my book. the newer analytical geometry is good for analytical geometry, but isnt directly helpful for linear algebra, and is hard to find now. it is a good source of material for people going into Pure Mathematics with a Calculus background.
