vidya says that when it comes to acting, she doesnt require too much. nor does she have to rehearse. but rajkahini was different. she must have tried 20-30 times for the role of rajkahini before finally ending up in doing it. she says it was intimidating. that is the first experience for me in acting. i needed to rehearse! the director says, she had done about 50-55 pages in an earlier version of the film. the first time we recorded the dialogue, i had to do it 20-30 times. i dont know if i was getting the expressions right or my delivery was right. but i did learn a lot about acting. i learnt how to listen and i learnt how to take suggestions. i love acting. i love listening to a role
im very uncomfortable talking about the film. i want to forget the whole experience of playing begum jaan. i want to forget everything. i dont need to talk about this at all. but the movie is so well received. a lot of people have been kind. its always a work of art. its always something that you can study and learn from. i got a lot of criticism from the street. many were asking why you dont do such roles. such a big role! i dont have to say anything about that. its like saying i cant play college going girls and saris. i wish i was born black to play those roles as well. i dont want to say anything. but i am glad that the film went on to inspire this many people. that makes me happy. its important to do those roles. its important to be able to narrate, to be able to talk about those issues.
then, i came to know that she was going to play begum jaan and i was like really? why? she is vidya balan! has she done female oriented roles till now? yes, yes she has. but she is just not the type who plays that type of role. she is very shy and has a very fresh approach to her characters. its only when you come face to face with her that you realise how utterly amazing she is! but she has a very low self-esteem. she tells me that she doesnt have confidence in herself. she feels that she is not very good.
the story which is told in flashbacks jumps between the lives of the 11 women and two men. it is believed that rituparna is the daughter of begum jaan and that vidya balan is her mother and their liaison is the root cause of her father isher. rituparna is seduced and then raped by isher and subsequently tells everybody that she is begum jaans daughter. the truth, however, is slowly unearthed as rituparna goes to college and is enthralled by feminism. she is however, trapped by a bigamist husband and has to choose between him or the mother who is the only one who she can trust. with the partition and the masses throwing their support behind the new state of pakistan, begum jaan is forced to split the brothel in two. one part is transferred to sujan (rudranil ghosh) with the promise of leading a normal life as a housewife in a small town. another part of the brothel is gifted to rituparna (rituparna sengupta) and saleem (nigel akkara). unknown to everybody, begum jaan is slowly dying of cancer, and she wants to take one last ride of her career. the film ends when she starts a political campaign against child prostitution with the help of one of the men from the brothel. she threatens them that if they refuse to support her and her cause, she will expose their illegal activities.
many people may have assumed that the film is just a sex-soaked rip-off. not so. a few other factors give the film a more than average weight. the story of begum jaans life is told through flashbacks, which is not something we have often seen before in indian cinema. the story of rituparna, who plays begum jaan in the film, is quite gripping and people who watch the film will not want it to end. speaking of bharati, the heroine will leave the viewer numb with her performance, especially in a small role. the performances from the key players of the film are delivered in an incredibly convincing manner, and give the film a philosophical twist. the music is also a highlight of the film. the film is a political thriller with an element of a masterpiece. this film may be a long struggle for begum jaans life, but the journey is worthwhile. i just wish we had more horror movies like this in indian cinema.
