in 1859, she founded the nightingale school of nursing at st thomas’ hospital, where she taught and trained a generation of nurses. with her husband, she went to india in 1860 to care for children suffering from famine and cholera in the province of bengal. the experience changed her life. in 1864, she helped establish king’s college, london. she spoke of her first meeting with florence nightingale with the words, “i had come to bid her welcome to london as my own countrywoman.” her views on nursing were published in notes on nursing in 1859, and notes on hospitals in 1860. the latter work called for a central, organized hospital system based on a set of guidelines. this system is now used by most hospitals in the world. the public also came to know of her work through her writing. she published notes on nursing in 1861, which became a best-seller. in 1862, she founded the british red cross, and in 1875, she published the diary of a nursing sister, which detailed her nursing experiences in scutari.
while working at st thomas’ hospital, nightingale met william stokes, a famous surgeon who later was elected as mayor of london. nightingale and stokes became engaged, but her mother refused to consent to the marriage. in 1869, the couple married, but their relationship was a turbulent one.
in 1870, nightingale left st thomas’ hospital to become the founder of the nightingale training school of nursing. it was from the school that the nightingale institute of nursing would later develop. in 1872, nightingale published notes on nursing, which was the first work to specifically address the welfare of women. in the same year, she established the nightingale school of midwifery at st thomas’. nightingale believed in four changes to be made in the field of nursing: women were to be included in nursing, education was to be offered at the undergraduate level, nursing was to be taught in hospitals, and the nursing profession was to be recognized by law.
