juggalos arent the only people who jump the broom at this time of year. detroit musicians also do, with the festivities picking up in a big way every october as detroit blocks out for a couple weeks every year. i was lucky enough to catch a show last week featuring 2 of these acts at the historic little egypt in ferndale, and i must say i was pretty impressed. the laughing hyenas (best name ever) are a decent post-hardcore band featuring 2 dudes & 1 chick, and theyre a tight unit with some tight slick playing. their songs are good without being too memorable in the sense that theyre just enjoyable to listen to, but like the real animal lovers in this country, i feel theyre trying to start a shitload of shit with their cover of who let the dogs out?
after 2 really good non-album eps, i thought someone wouldve come along and released their first album in what has to be the longest gap between albums in the history of satanism, but then 2 of my fellow juggalettes were like “let there be an album already.” then they went ahead and did it. shaggy 2 dope is back with the followup to the excellent dead horse poems and the first album since leaving psychopathic records in 2007. after taking a year off from the business, the clowns have returned with a 5 song album that is just as much fun as icp is wont to be. props to the group for being able to always entertain & captivate & make me laugh regardless of their personal viewpoint. wellllllll, not always, but theres a reason that went platinum 4 times. if youre gonna hate on an act, dont praise them more than it deserves, thanks.
the next two tracks are both from the great milenko, but the latter is actually a rework of a 2000 track by the vandals. wretched (pt. 1) is one of the two singles from the album. the other is creepin. 2) is basically a rehash of the whole album (just put on hold when it comes to the instrumental), although it is the only one with an extended intro. the former goes back to the sound of underground zoology more than what is found on boondox or riddle box, while the latter is more of a jack u. wide classic rock party, with n.w.a, stray cats, aerosmith, kool & the gang, and gil scott heron all given shout outs. and just because of that, this track gets a honorable mention in the book of songs that shoulda been an album.
the final track is the first and the darkest of all, and the only one that never appeared on an icp album. it was originally titled the great milenko part 1, and is the first part of the narrative called the great milenko. the rest of it was released as the great milenko, part 2 (also known as) the following year. the great milenko (pt. 1) is over 13 minutes long, and is actually an extended mix of the intro to the original version of part 2. it is actually the instrumental to a song called paul’s prank call where mike judge has a phone sex call with brian blase to play a game, and has his character on the line as a judge for the game. the song itself tells of milenko part of the plan to release the helpless and corrupt music industry, including blase and judge, through a mutated version of kona, that milenko brings to los angeles that has unlimited energy and is feeding off the negativity of the music biz like a vampire. the song is pretty goofy, and makes a song that coulda been an album itself, just wish they woulda done that.
