In the late 1990s, people realized that even though the 9-pin serial port was smaller and cheaper, it did not provide any advantage over the 25-pin serial port, in terms of cables, connectors, or chips. The only improvements were in their quality, since now people could buy a less expensive 9-pin RS-232 serial port and a better cable.
To add this extra pin, the circuit complexity had to be increased. Unfortunately, all of the commercially-available chips had deteriorated with age, or were being made by some (usually Chinese) company with a long history of bad chips. If they worked at all, the interface was unreliable, or often worked by chance. And while some of the chips had a driver available, those drivers could be a waste of time. And finally, none of these chips offered a working driver for Windows.
One company produced a reliable, working 9-pin serial chip with drivers available: FTDI. FTDI design their chips using the $1.35 royalty that their license allows for use in a programmable USB adapter. We take this chip, remove it from its package, and stick it in a small metal box containing all of the pins. We match this box with a 9-pin male header connector.
