the animation style is distinctive in that it closely mimics the hand-drawn look of vintage disney animation. the art is a little rough and there are some interesting visual effects. for example, when the kung fu teams meet, there is a neat effect when the characters glow in the dark. theres also some interesting lighting effects to the environments and 3d-like effects to the character movements and camera shots, but theyre not as convincing as they are in the main instalments. theres a few bright colours used, but theyre toned down for a more natural feel. theres also plenty of generic background imagery to help with the story. this is sometimes a bit grating as its more about the setting than the characters, but thankfully the narrative is strong enough to overcome this slightly. the soundtrack is surprisingly good and contemporary and has enough variety to keep the story moving. there are some hip-hop beats and some music that would have been popular in the 1980s.
not only this, but we are also introduced to a new villain, tai lung, who wants to usurp kung fu from the earth. to this end, he plans on capturing all of the panda gods. to help stop him, the five must find the powerful and hidden scroll and combine its power with their own to save kung fu, and the world, from tai lung.
theres a lot to love here. the story is simply a fantastic, clever and well-written, short tale, which is entertaining from start to finish. it has charm, humour, a bit of romance and plenty of action. the cast and animation are both top notch, as are the characters and story. theres also some wonderful characters, too.
for those who aren’t familiar with the kung fu panda universe, its a wonderful place to start. the four panda gods in the film are fluffy, sneezy, happy and paddles. also, the furious five are po, crane, mantis, tigress and viper. if that weren’t enough, there’s also kung fu and the furious five’s sidekick, a crow.
however, theres also another note of warning. even though its a short film, its still quite lengthy. although the main story is pleasingly, if not extremely, short, there are a couple of flashbacks to the past.
in the past, we see how po became a kung fu master, how he met the furious five and how they became friends. these flashbacks are really enjoyable, and we learn more about po, but it does add to the film slightly.
