even the best of games make the player feel uncomfortable, as a character of any kind, whether through the “look” of him/her or the way he/she reacts to the player’s actions. but in kane & lynch, the bad guys react just as they would in real life, which, apparently, is bad enough to be used for comic effect, but not to the point of any game-breaking violence. this is a movie, after all, so when we see a victim kick the crap out of a thug, we just laugh and clap our hands in delight, as if to say, “look, this is a game, but we’re playing it just like the movies!”.
in the first kane & lynch, the player picked the weapons, ammo, and health. in the sequel, they can only get those things through shooting. in other words, if you want to make a stealth game, you’d better make sure that the enemy doesn’t know that you’re there. in this case, you can’t use a weapon until you grab it from a fallen enemy, which makes the scene of a dozen men dead from a single shot all the more impressive, and makes the game even more irritating. luckily, this is just one of many flaws. once we get past this, it’s smooth sailing.
the music is also excellent. the fast-paced and hard-rock-like techno soundtrack is full of pestering and hypnotizing electronic beats, which never stop. the soundtrack is even more impressive when you consider that it’s a completely reworked version of the one from the original kane & lynch, and it’s a huge improvement. the only point of contention is the sound effects, which, like the poor camera work, sometimes make this game feel like a cheesy movie.
