theres also a category of plugin that is meant to replace the classic reverb plugins, and is part of what i called the next-generation movement. these are not reverb plugins in the usual sense, but are based on the same principles of convolution and ir techniques. theyre both made by the same guys so theyll share a lot of similar characteristics, but are not identical.
next, the sends and receive sections are where the magic happens. you can choose from 30 irs – of which 16 are publicly available – or record your own. any additional irs can be saved as a 16-bit wav file, which can then be dragged into this section and be processed like any other ir. the send and receive controls are designed to make it easy for you to match the settings of your reference irs, whether this is an ir you have recorded yourself or one that you have chosen from the library. for more on this, see the full review of aether. of course, like all the best plugins in this series, it is also possible to tweak the settings of each ir to suit your own needs. if you decide to make your own irs, remember that the same control structure applies: sends, receive, send off, and receive off.
in contrast, these plugins are free to use, but you do need to purchase them if you want to download any of their library modules, which are all rendered in 32-bit (usually, theres also a 64-bit version available too). so, while youre not paying for their software, theres no free plugin samples either, but then again, if theyre free, youre not likely to shell out for a licence either, right?
