the unhelpful teacher

I recently asked the kids what their favorite thing about school was, and a couple of them had a really hard time deciding between a million different answers.

At first I thought, “oh, another talk about what I don’t like about my job,” but then I thought, “well, it’s actually a pretty good sign that they’re actually interested in school and what they’re learning and what they like about it,” and so I was super excited.

After a lot of wrestling with whether or not they’d answered honestly, I realized that they hadn’t really thought about the question at all.

I asked them if they liked history, and most of them said no. I asked them if they liked reading, and most of them said no.

They’re all pretty smart kids, but I don’t think any of them are especially interested in school, and I’m hoping to change that!

I’ve been teaching for six years, and I honestly thought that I was an excellent teacher, and I’ve had years where I could teach a lesson and if no one seemed to care, I’d just look at myself in the mirror and think, “Okay, well, how can I make you like me, kiddos?”
